What is excess
Excess is the maximum amount you must pay in case of vehicle damage. When signing the rental agreement, an amount equal to all or part of the excess is held on your credit card.
This amount depends on the insurance policy details included in the rental, which vary depending on the rental company and the type of vehicle. Typically, the excess ranges from €500 to €1,500.
If the vehicle is returned with damage, the repair costs will be deducted from the excess. If the car is returned undamaged, the blocked amount will be refunded.
Practical example: if the damage amounts to €2,000 and the excess is €500, you will only pay the excess, while the insurance company covers the remaining €1,500. If the damage is €200, you will pay only that amount and be refunded the remaining €300.
With a no-excess contract, you pay nothing for repair costs.
What is the deposit
The deposit is a tool used by the rental company to protect itself in case of theft or damage to the vehicle. It is a sum of money set by the rental provider, which is blocked on the credit card, making it temporarily unavailable.
This amount becomes available again upon return of the vehicle, after it is released by the rental company.
It’s important to know that the company does not charge anything: it simply blocks the deposit amount for a certain period.
